Tulsans favor measures to fix streets

Tulsans apparently weren't kidding around when they said they wanted the streets fixed.

They favor a proposed sales tax extension for street repairs by more than 3-to-1, according to the latest Oklahoma Poll, and a bond issue that would raise property taxes by almost 2-to-1.

"I just think it's something that has to be done," said poll respondent Jane Etheridge. "We'll end up paying, one way or the other."

Forty-four percent said streets were the No. 1 problem facing the city, far ahead of economic development and jobs, which came in second at 17 percent.

The poll, conducted for the TulsaWorld and KOTV, channel 6, by SoonerPoll.com of Oklahoma City, surveyed 503 likely Tulsa voters. Of those, 411 said they definitely intend to vote on the two measures on Tuesday's ballot in Tulsa that would finance a five-year, $451.6 million street improvement program.
