SoonerPoll was founded in the Spring of 2004 by Bill Shapard, who believed that public opinion polling was either by Democrat pollsters or Republican pollsters and media needed an independent source for polling. As explained in detail in the Staff section, Shapard began his career managing political campaigns, writing a political opinion column and co-hosting and producing a weekly political radio talk show.
SoonerPoll is a public opinion pollster that does research for the media about current political issues and political candidate races. Since SoonerPoll’s founding it has become the leading public opinion polling company in the state of Oklahoma. In 2006 and 2008 SoonerPoll conducted more polls for Oklahoma media than all other public opinion pollsters combined. SoonerPoll has done research for a wide variety of Oklahoma clients including various television and print media outlets, but many associations and interest groups as well.
SoonerPoll’s data collection process is the most accurate available. Instead of out-sourcing to a call center halfway across the U.S., SoonerPoll employs several call centers in the same Oklahoma City office. Callers are tailor-trained for different clients and/or areas of research. We work by the motto that, ‘bad data in will always lead to bad data out.’ We feel that you can never expect valid research if you’re working with poor data and/or poor collection and that you cannot expect valid data if you have no control over that collection process found in the call center.
SoonerPoll’s effort to create the most accurate and trusted data collection process available has led to membership in various professional organizations that hold members to a high set of ethical standards. SoonerPoll is a member of the Market Research Association (MRA), the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), the Council for Marketing and Opinion Research (CMOR), the American Marketing Association (AMA) and the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF). Membership in these groups help establish a checks and balances system that encourage SoonerPoll to abide by ethical and valid research conduct.
