These results were a part of a block of transgender questions asked in SoonerPoll's latest statewide Quarterly Poll.

[QUESTION] "Do you SUPPORT or OPPOSE the teaching of gender identity to children under the age of 12?"

  1. Strongly support 17.8%
  2. Somewhat support 11.9
  3. COMBINED SUPPORT 29.7
  4. Don't know 6.6
  5. Somewhat oppose 7.8
  6. Strongly oppose 55.9
  7. COMBINED OPPOSE 63.7

Nearly 86 percent of Republicans strongly opposed gender identity teaching, but over 67 percent of Democrats supported the idea of teaching gender identity to children under the age of 12. More than 54 percent of Independents also supported it as well.

As one might expect, those who identify as conservative strongly opposed the teaching, but the poll found an incredible 98 percent opposed. Nearly 32 percent of self-identified moderates strongly opposed, but 25.6 percent somewhat opposed and 39.9 percent strongly supported it. The poll also found an incredible 84.4 percent of those who identify as very liberal strongly supported teaching children under the age of 12 about different gender identities.

The teaching of gender identity to children was strongly opposed in nearly all of Oklahoma's five congressional seats with the least in Oklahoma's fourth district at 46.8 percent. Men and women were near equal in their opposition with men four points more likely to strongly oppose. Women, however, were ten points more likely to strongly support with 22.4 percent compared to men at just 12 percent.

As the age of the respondents increased, so did the opposition to teaching gender identity, as an amazing 65.6 percent of those age 18-24 strongly supported it to only 7.8 percent of those over the age of 65.

About the Poll

SoonerPoll.com, Oklahoma’s public opinion pollster, asked these questions of Oklahoma likely voters.

The scientific study was conducted from June 1-4, 2023 with 302 likely Oklahoma voters selected at random statewide from SoonerPoll's proprietary online panel. The sample was weighted by education, age, and congressional district in order to reflect the Oklahoma likely voter population for a general election. The weighting was conducted using a 'layered technique.'

The sample reflects the traditional demographical profile of the Oklahoma likely voter with roughly half of respondents identifying as conservative and nearly a third identifying as Moderate. The study has a Margin of Error (MoE) of ±5.65 percent.
